December meeting features USFS Scientist

We’re excited to have Dr. Wade Tinkham, Researcher Forester with the US Forest Service join us on Saturday, December 3, 2020 to discuss his fascinating work. Here’s a description of his presentation.

Monitoring From Above: Drone Characterization of Dry Conifer Forests

Forest management decisions are only as good as the data available to support them and in many instances, forest inventory data is limited in its extent. One option to make more extensive project data available to managers is the use of unmanned aerial system to remotely characterize individual trees. This presentation will review several early studies testing these methods in ponderosa pine-dominated forests. We will look at studies tested how decisions about data acquisition, processing, and modeling impact the quality of forest inventory metrics derived from UAS data.
